A Customer Story - Witham Specialist Vehicles

Witham Specialist Vehicles has been in business for more than 30 years, specialising in the sale and marketing of ex-Ministry of Defence vehicles, plant and equipment.

We are based near Grantham, Lincolnshire on a site which includes a facility for repairing and respraying all types of vehicles and plant; workshops for commercial vehicles and light vehicles; and also our own test track (yes, we get to try out the tanks!).

We gained certification to ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 in 2011 with Independent European Certification.

We decided to introduce a Quality Management System and become ISO 9001 certified, as a requirement for applying for the contract of sole UK sales and marketing agent for vehicles and vehicle associated spares for the Ministry of Defence.

Definite benefits and improved efficiency

There have been definite benefits to the business since implementation of the QMS: the number of customer complaints has dropped; efficiency has improved along with more consistency in our work.

So although our move to become certified to ISO 9001 was driven by requirement, the business has definitely benefited positively from the move, often in ways that we hadn't anticipated.

Overall, the process of gaining certification to ISO 9001:2008 was straightforward enough. It has always been clear to us what we needed to do to achieve conformity and on the whole we didn't find the assessment process too painful.

For others looking to go down the same path, we'd recommend finding a certification body that is responsive to customer concerns and that is transparent and independent in the way it works.
